The Backlot Tour

Guests line up under an enclosed area, and watch monitors that discuss the production of movies like Con Air. The Backlot Studio Tour starts with a demonstration of special water effects like how a storm at sea and battle of ships are done for motion pictures. Part of the demonstration involves audience participation.

TIP: Your chances of being asked to participate increase if you're at the front of the line-up.

Following the "damp" presentation, guests go through a prop warehouse where they can see props from famous Disney movies while waiting to board a tram that takes them on the backlot tour itself. The tram gives you a behind the scenes look at production bungalows, the wardrobe department (where you can watch the costumers at work), and the scenery shop. The parking lot of the stars is a delight where you'll find Hercules' chariot and Cinderella's pumpkin (with a "No parking after midnight" sign). The tram takes you into the Studios' neighborhood which are actually empty shells, not full homes. Some of these you might recognize from popular TV shows and movies. At Christmas, the neighborhood is home in large part, to the 4 million Osborne Family Christmas lights. Driving past the "boneyard", you'll see familiar old vehicles from Disney motion pictures of the past.

At Catastrophe Canyon, you'll get to see how earthquakes, flash floods, torrential downpours and explosions are done for film production.

TIP: If you want to stay dry, sit on the right side of the tram.

Your tour ends with a drive past New York Street. The Backlot Studio Tour has something for everyone and appeals to all age groups. While not a major attraction, it is quite busy for most of the day. The tour is wheelchair accessible. For deaf guests, sign language interpreters are available if you have make arrangements with the Sign Language Co-ordinator 2 weeks prior to your visit.

Even though its is'nt a "thrill ride" The Backlot Tour can be quite thrilling!
